Stream of Consciousness Sunday - Pre-Holidays Freak Out

This past week was full of ups & downs.  The first up: I had the opportunity to finally meet one of my virtual mentors, Olivier Blanchard aka @thebrandbuilder (in real life). He made a rare Twin Cities appearance to speak about the role of a Community Manager in an organization at a MIMA (Minnesota Interactive Marketing Association) event, so I took the morning off from work to attend. He's a down to earth "what you see is what you get" kind of guy, an awesome communicator, a blogger, business owner, family man & also a published author. If you haven't picked up a copy of his book: Social Media ROI - you really should add it to your business reading list. I have it on my phone as well as on paperback.  For more info on Olivier's book, click on the link to part 1 of my book review at the bottom of this post. One of these days I'll get around to writing the part 2.

Up number two was volunteering for the Greater Mpls. Crisis Nursery, which I've been doing for five years now with other ladies & gents from my church.  We cook lunch for the kids who are staying at this facility once a month & we all take turns rotating in 4 times a year.  I make a mean quesadilla & the staff always remembers me and asks how things are going for me & my family.  The kids are so sweet, you never leave without plenty of smiles & hugs from them.

The downs...Found out my hubby was going Deer Hunting (again), so I am solo Mom this weekend. Work is also ramping up - right at the wrong time when I need to be thinking about when to take the rest of my vacation & I just don't know how I'm going to make that work given everything on my need to accomplish list.  So, now that I've got that off my chest, I'm getting ready to time myself... It's now 10:11 pm.

After a brief hiatus last week due to a last minute Saturday post, it's Week 18 of my Stream of Consciousness Sunday posts. I'm starting to feel the "pre-holidays freak out."  It's only a few days away Thanksgiving. As I alluded to above, work is a B-word, so I have no idea how I'm going to do all the cleaning & prep work I normally to to prepare for the big family group we normally host for dinner.  I have a feeling I may be ordering food to be delivered & working from home on Wednesday... that might make it manageable.

It's also way too close to Christmas & I'm not nearly as far along with my holiday shopping.  Munchkin is still dog-earing toy catalogs in hopes that Santa will back his sleigh up to our house & dump the mother load of toys down our chimney. I'm going to do my best to pare it down this year & give him a few bigger ticket items instead of a million small & medium things to open. It's tough because his 5th birthday is only a few months away.

I know somehow everything will get done. Then I'll look back & say why was I so worried?!  But until everyone has walked out of the door after Thanksgiving, the house is clean and put back together, & I can sit with my feet up, over the next few days it will all seem so overwhelming.

What are you guys freaking out about lately...do you stress about hosting gatherings during the holidays?

This was my 5 minute Stream of Consciousness Sunday post. (Well sort of this week.) It’s five minutes of your time and a brain dump. Want to try it? Here are the rules…

Set a timer and write for 5 minutes only.
§         Write an intro to the post if you want but don’t edit the post. No proofreading or spellchecking. This is writing in the raw.
§         Publish it somewhere. Anywhere. The back door to your blog if you want. But make it accessible.
§         Add the Stream of Consciousness Sunday badge to your post.
§         Link up your post at all.things.fadra
§         Visit your fellow bloggers and show some love.

I freak out about not meeting my yearly goals and having to meet up with friends/relatives which I rather not meet with during the festive season.

I'm freaking out because I work the night before thanksgiving AND thanksgiving night! How can I cook AND sleep????

Yes, I do! I usually get nervous about cooking for new people, mainly because I also fear that others will hate my food. That's never happened, however. So, my fears are mostly unfounded.

We're traveling for all of the holidays this year (I think) so I'm totally putting the pressure on someone else!

I have the same problem with Evan. His birthday is a month after Christmas.

And I love Olivier too. So glad to hear he's just who I thought he would be!

I'm sure it will all work out for you! I tend to feel a little anxious about where we will spend the holidays. My husband and I have been married a little over a year but it can be a little tough figuring out who to visit ect. We both are used to celebrating a certain way as are our families plus I really want to have some of our own traditions...ah good old compromise
